We are excited to share insights from an immersive session on Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) that took place on April 3, 2024, at Department  of Clinical Psychology, KAPMIAHS, Shivamogga. Jointly organised by KAPMIAHS and Ishanya India Foundation Bangalore by Mrs. Swathi Vellal, Founder and Director and Mrs. Vaishnaavi Nagarajan, Speech and Language Therapist , Ishanya India Foundation. The session delved into various aspects of ASD management and support. Key characteristics of ASD, including challenges in social communication and sensory sensitivities, were explored in depth. Participants gained valuable insights into early interventions, the ABC approach to behavior analysis, and the application of ABA as an effective intervention strategy. The session started with an overview of the RPWD Act2016, emphasizing the importance of legal frameworks in ensuring inclusivity.

The Resource persons  delved into the medical and social models of disability, discussing the shift towards a more holistic approach to addressing the needs of individuals with ASD. Two particularly noteworthy topics covered were Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) and Neurodiversity. AAC was discussed as a means of communication support for individuals with limited verbal abilities, with insights into its benefits, impact, and dispelling of myths. The concept of Neurodiversity was emphasized embracing diversity and setting goals based on individual strengths and preferences. In conclusion, the session emphasized the importance training the families and people around the Autistic person.While adopting a person-centered approach it is necessary to continually update their knowledge and skills to support individuals with ASD and their families effectively.
